Father Marquette and Louis Jolliet
Father Marquette and Louis Jolliet were explorers who wanted to spread Christianity in the New World. Marquette was born in Laon, France in the year 1637. His partner, Louis Jolliet was born in the New World (Quebec City) in 1645. Father Marquette met Jolliet when he was working with missionaries in Wisconsin, and Jolliett was trading with the natives. They decided to gather a group to travel down the Mississippi River, and explore the south of the New World. They spread the word of Christianity as they traveled, and Jolliet took many notes about his observations of the area.
After returning to the North, Marquette continued to work with natives. However, he died from disease in 1675.
Jolliet died in 1700 on one of his later voyages. He continued to explore the area for France until his death.
