Native Americans
Marquette and Jolliet had good relationships with the Native Americans they met on their journey down the Mississippi River. They tried to be friendly, so that the natives would be more likely to accept Christianity as their new religion! The two explorers also learned a lot from these people, including which crops were best to grow in the area, and what type of fish were popular in the river.
